The 13th Human Rights Research Projects Contest (2025)

Seoul National University Human Rights Center organized a student human rights research projects contest as a course in which undergraduates can think about social phenomena, legal systems, and cultures from a human rights standpoint and look for ways to improve human rights. students who are interested in human rights are encouraged to participate.

1. Human Rights Research Projects Contest application

○ Research Topics: A topic among various human rights themes

○ Research period: 2025.5. ~ 2025.9 (5 months)

○ Eligibility: SNU Undergraduate students, including students on a leave of absence

(should be enrolled in Spring and Fall semester, 2025)

○ How to apply:

-Send an application form and documents below

-Deadline: Monday, 31th March at Midnight

(4) A certificate of SNU student registration.

○ Restriction: For the same study subject supported by any other research funding programs

2. Research Grants

※ The grants will be given according to the number of people participating in research

※ The amount is adjustable based on the size and nature of the projects as well as the total number of participants.

○ An award for the excellent research

After reviewing the outcome research projects, there will be an award and prize money for the excellent research

* May not select winning prizes, if there is no research that meets the criteria.

**The number and types of awards may vary depending on the research results.

3. Dates and deadlines

○ Research Period: From May to September, 2025 (5 months)

-Date: a day in the last week of Aug. 2025 (*Adjustable/the exact time will be announced later)

-Format: the specific format will be announced later

○ Submission of the Final Report

-Deadline: September 26th, 2025

-Final report: a maximum 20-page long (A4 sized) final research findings report.

The report should be written in the form of thesis.

4. Notes

○ Suspension and withdrawal of research grants

- If research grants are used in violation of the purpose of payment

- When found supported by any other research funding programs for the same research topic

- If Presentation of Work in Progress, Submission of the Final Report, and statement of accounts are not submitted within the period

- If obvious reasons for disrupting the research have occurred

○ In case the “Human Subjects Research” is included such as an interview as a research methodology

- If your research methodology is applicable to “Human Subjects Research”, research ethics education is mandatory.

- “Human Subjects Research” is defined as research which involves physical procedures by which data are gathered and manipulations of the research subject or the subject’s environment that are performed for research purposes(intervention), communication or interpersonal contact between researcher and subject (interaction) or whose data is obtained through intervention or interaction with the individual or from individually identifiable information (Article 2, Provision 1 「Bioethics and Safety Act」).

Article 20 (Principles)

When conducting Human Subjects Research (including clinical trial, biomedical research, behavioral science) a researcher must respect a subject’s human rights, health and welfare first and foremost

The researcher must inform in full the subject of the purpose, procedure and posible predicaments of the research and receive a voluntary consent from the subject. However, if the research has been approved by authorized institutions like SNU Bioethics Deliberation Committee, informing process can be exempted.

Any possible danger which can happen to the subject should be minimized. A research that violates the subject’s health condition and welfare should not be conducted in the first place.

Special consideration is required for a subject of disadvantaged groups when receiving a consent or informing the possible predicaments.

The subject’s privacy should be protected and personal information should remain confidential.
